Just to update this a bit as i know the person in question.
They Used torrents early last year till approximately May/June when they switched over to newsgroups using SSL connection and stopped using torrents then.
Could this infringement date back that far?

I wouldn't be surprised if it did...

Yes they have a netgear router (who doesn't ) Their timings are a bit off and a rough estimate is stopped using torrents 6 months ago.

First of all take a deep breath and don't panic. ACS Law are well known for doing this. Their business works on the premise that people will just panic and pay. ACS Law are highly unlikely to go to the trouble of actually taking you to court. Second of all don't ignore the letter. It is a legal letter so you have to respond. Fortunately ACS Legal cannot prove beyond all doubt that you downloaded the CD that they say you did. Because of this you can write a letter of denial. Go to http://beingthreatened.yolasite.com and follow the steps listed there. You will find a template for a letter of denial and help to deal with this issue. Good luck Dyls

This is similar to the whole Getty Images thing, people will gladly say it is a scam until they receive a letter or they get take to court or 'further action' is taken. As Dylan has said, do NOT ignore the letter under any circumstances, but I would be trying to negotiate a way out of this with ACS.
