Traffic management is a must for any isp, to stop which is probably either constant abuse with p2p/nntp and/or all the streaming available on the web/iplayer/sky player etc.  There must be new ways to tackle the issue rather than just limiting everything betwen 6pm and 12pm.

I think Karoo should create packages/traffic management around what people want.  different packages could have different prioritied bandwidth for certain traffic, ie business packages could have lower bandwidth for streaming and p2p/nntp yet higher for mail and surfing , there could be differnt types of packages for personal use, a bit like sky where you get the basic at a lower price, then add priorities onto your package.  so if i want to download, i would add p2p/nntp prioties to my list, but streaming may have a lower priority until i add the streaming priority to my package, if you get my meaning.

so rather than just limiting everything on your account, they could limit what you dont pay for.  i appreciate there is only a certain amount of bandwidth and everyone wants it between 6pm and 10pm, although they could halt most of the streaming bandwidth problems with a cache box (or probably lots of them!). most people leave downloads going overnight and they finish in the early hours of the morning anyway, but giving a package the only allows this traffic would make people aware that their downloads will start at 12pm and run during the night, for a reduced package price of course!

i would like to check out the virgin 20mb package and see what that is like a 830pm, are they limited too?

Some good points there, Virgin don't target specific types of traffic instead they throttle your whole connection down to 75% of what it is, if you download, or upload X amount in a given time period. Everyone on cable connects at the speed they pay for, which is an advantage of cable using coax, but anyway.
I don't think this kind of system would work on Karoo as everyone is connected at a different speed etc. so unless the shaping system was aware of how fast each account or line was connected it wouldn't work.

See here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

On the other side of the coin, O2 and BE manage to provide unshaped, unthrottled internet access for a much lower price Smiley

This might sound a bit daft, but are you using standard ports news or secure news ports? I imagine Karoo target those specifically.

This is totally unacceptable Karoo.
I pay top prices for a lousy unreliable service, my dongle with three is faster.

Try a news provider that lets you access secure news on a non-standard port. I'll PM you one.

They offer quite a few ports and usually it is much faster.

It'd probably be responsible for me to point out to anyone stumbling across this thread that we are of course only discussing the transfer of legitimate materials (open source software, creative commons video and music etc) when using binary newsgroups. Smiley

Since when has Http been affected on the Pro packages, I have never had problems like this before, are they traffic shaping the Pro packages now?

Just thought I'd try SSL News on a non-standard port to see what it's like and it looks to be hovering around 270kB/s at the mo. Not great.

Actually it's easing off now a bit. I wonder if we're seeing network congestion that's easing off now that people are starting to go to bed?
