I disagree, I can d/l from rapidshare at 1+MB/s

Do you do a lot of rapishare downloading? If so it may be that you have been tagged as a 'heavy user' and as such put a reduced rapidshare profile?

I tried downloading a linux distro from rapidshare and it came down at 1.4MBs at 10pm.

hmm - very strange if you are shaped and I am not?!

Same here, very fast speeds over HTTP, hopefully once all the upgrades are completed they can share out the bandwidth so that it is fair across all protocols Wink

The way I see it is that we pay for bandwidth.
We pay upfront, be that for low, mid or pro, we are given a limit for download in GB.
If we go over that limit we pay, so why should we be shaped?
Surely its in Karoo's benefit to allow us to go over our limit to make money from us, I can only assume that the price they charge us for each GB over limit they will make a profit on?

If we choose to go over limit then that's our choice?
It's like buying a new car with one of those 'don't do more than 10,000 miles a year' clauses, and if you do there is a financial penalty if you wish to sell it back to the dealer... but... to make sure you don't do those miles they restrict your car to 30mph max while on the motorway.
But this is also subjective, they make everyone go at 30mph during the rush hour, but those who have the GLX can go as fast as they like as soon as it hits 12am..

Its not the right way to keep customers, and I am sure we will see more relaxation as it comes closer to the inevitable conclusion of competition  entering Hull.  Karoo are going to have to carry on this 'glasnost' as time goes on, if not they will cease to exist come two years time.

40-60GB per month usage, 90% of which would be work related. 10% rapidshare stuff as explained previously, can't see less than 10GB per month being classed as heavy..., right?

Possibly Newland, Cottingham or even North, depending on the route, most likely be Newland I think, tech will tell you.

Let's just see what happens when the maintenance if done Smiley

The Problem here is with Internet Transit.

KCOM do not allow open access and throttle access back based on what bandwidth they wish to make availible to their users. ISP's only do this when demand exceeds supply and also where their business model relies on users NOT using their allowance - its a bit like paying for unlimited local phone calls !!!!

For an ISP to pack shape means 2 things:

They do not have enough bandwidth or are not prepared to pay for more
They want to force users to pay for priority to applications - IPlayer for example

I work for a large ISP based In Rochdale who offers no shaping, no filtering and would love to come to Hull but we cannot build a business case around broadband services only and need access to the line at the Wholesale Level to offer telephony of which KCOM do not provide and OFCOM do not force them to provide - unlike the rest of the UK where BT Openreach was forced to provide WLR2 and WLR3 of which is regulated.

We are extremely relucant to enter into discsussions with KCOM since discussions would be fruitless since it is not in the commercial interest of KCOM to other competing CP's access to the line at the wholesale level.

I would argue that the Nexus Telecommunications deal that allows companies such as Cobus Communications to resell athe line line and manage the customer is a Wholesale Deal and should be made availiable to every other Communications Provider (CP)and not just Nexus.

The Nexus deal was hastily brought about through a complaint made by Nexus to Ofcom about the "tying" of KCOM lines with Local calls which forced Nexus's Hull business customers off Nexus for local calls since all businesses are forced to take local calls from KC.

This issue adversley affects all business and domestic customers in restricting choice and restricting the numbers of CP's prepared to offer services in the Hull area.

Once KCOM are forced to wholesale the line then the situation could dramatically change although the deal with BT for the management of KCOM's infrastructure may well prevent / preculde BT Wholesale from opening up a POP in HUll !!!!!

If WLR is not achieved then I envisage Hull becoming a technological backwater.

I'm more interested in the LLU Operators such as Carphone warehouse, O2/BE, Sky, and what they have to offer. Surely enticing a company who can offer multiple services such as phone, Internet, TV and maybe mobile broadband is more important and useful to people than a company offering line rental at 50p cheaper than KCOM with NO "free" unlimited local calls. Most people who call out of town will use their mobile phone bundled minutes, or some other kind of VOIP or calling service if they are calling abroad.

I keep saying this.. what is disappointing is that the likes of CPW, O2 and Sky will enable (install their own kit) a BT exchange which services as little as 3,000 properties but yet non of the companies, as far as I know have even contacted KC to negotiate the prices and what it would cost them to install their equipment in a KC exchange. As you all know KC have quite a few exchanges over the Hull and East Riding area, some of them are large, and some are small. Many of them will service over 5,000 properties, and even over 10,000+ properties, so surely there is some business case for the LLU companies to atleast investigate.
