Well I should say it works with video applications that support hardware acceleration. Flash based video is apparently a bit crappy through this box because it uses the Atom CPU to decode it.

Ah - I read more! Actually the Ion only supports hardware decode of MPEG-2, VC-1, and AVC (H.264). If you try and decode anything else it is done by the CPU and at near HD the Atom chip will probably fall over.

Google is your friend, and the build cost depends on the person whos building it.

You would be better off looking up the prices on ebuyer or scan to get an idea of UK pricing.

Had a quick look (Ebuyer),

I only missed out case and PSU, a decent PSU would probably be around £50 Corsair or OCZ.

So cost for parts your probably looking at around £500 + £70 for Windows 7

I would prefer a Intel i5 build, but would probably push the cost up abit, only real concern I can see is the GPU seems underpower compared to the rest of the system.
If its to expensive I'd consider taking the HDD down to a 1TB saving around £20 maybe just 2GB memory (and upgrade in future) saving £40.

Finally put it together yourself Smiley Its great fun. Alternatively take the specs your looking at into a shop in Hull and see how much they would charge to assemble it, it probably depends.

The GPU is fine for non gaming usage though?

I'm not really interested in upgrading as that involves opening the thing up, I just leave them until they breakdown or are clapped out (usually 5 years).

I already have this machine, I was more asking what people thought of it, and if I'd been charged a reasonable price. That's pretty much what I paid.

I have to say doing it this way was a steep learning curve, I didn't realise for example that the PSU is an important part of the machine and not a cheapo afterthought, how much power GPUs use etc.

It was surprisingly difficult to find anyone to build a machine to my spec, impossible in fact. Several whose ads said they would just wouldn't, or would offer a range of parts they had rather than what I wanted. The mail-order one I did get, they didn't build it to my specifications (didn't partition the HD) didn't include the software they said they would, and it didn't work properly when I got it and has to go back. So all in all a marvellous success! And the HDD is quite noisy.

I think generally unless you really know what you're looking for, probably best to buy something off the shelf locally, a lot less hassle. This one looks good for the price.

So you all say.Can you recommend a (Slim?) book, something like computer building for beginners. I can't build a PC because I think that would be dangerous for me and my computer's health (imagine your mam set loose on your machine) but I would like to know say how to take an old hard drive from an old pc and put it in a caddy to see if it's still working (if that's not too risky). Or maybe some online links?

Another question, is it worth asking them to partition the HDD now and how big should it be? I only have the oem disc, and as I understand it the main reason for me wanting a partion (the ability to reinstall withough harming data)doesn't work with an oem disc. Therefore is there any other point in having it done? I'm very non-tec and the only other person I know who had a partition said it was a pain, having to keeping moving stuff that had gone onto the wrong drive.

PM for Adrian.
