If you were buying a new desktop, not for gaming, just for surfing and storing plenty of music and video (300GB plus), can you suggest any and where best to get them from (even mail order) as I'm stumped by all the choice. Budget very roughly £800.

800 is very expensive if all you want to do is store music and video.

best you can get for around 800.. these are all "branded" higher spec parts. this will play games wellish.

if you dont want to build your own just get a dell inspiron or something.

they are very expensive and crap though. in fact you cant "buy" a good computer really, you'll just get nobbed one - your choice again!

An excellent response Willcocks, this goes to show how good the community is on this board.
You have gone above and beyond what was required from the question, and judging from your answer no doubt you will have many other people asking for advice very soon.

thanks once again for such an informative answer.

Here is a barebones pc i put together for my self, this system is being used as a server but is pretty good as a basic desktop.
  • Intel Little Falls 2 - £57.99. This board has an integrated DualCore Atom 330 CPU, the CPU isn't very powerful but will handle media playback very well, just don't expect it to do HD video.
  • 2GB DDR2 533 - £33.63. The LF2 board only has one slot and will only support DDR2 533/667 at a maximum of 2GB.
  • 1TB SATAII HD - £56.31. Plenty of space. the only reason why i've put one is the case i used only has space for one drive.
  • SATA DVD-RW - £15.99
  • Mini ITX Case - With 300W PSU - £34.99. cheap but nice case with a power supply.
  • Total cost of this system 198.91 including VAT.

Here is a spec that i would recommend:

None of the prices include an OS or monitor.

Wow, that's a lot more comprehensive than I thought I'd get, I thought I'd get a recommendation from the Dell website  Shocked Thank you both very much.

I meant a budget limit of about £800 and I should point out before it's obvious I know nothing about computers.

The problem is willcocks you've given me three choices, which is like 2 too many, should I go for the middle one?   Smiley

For instance could you swap them about, say have the blueray commandergc recommended instead of the cheaper DVDRW or the bigger ram from the first but with the second spec (does that one not need a graphics card?) The first is like the second but with twice as good (and expensive) mobo and processor right? As I'm not a gamer would they be wasted on me?

But you'd definitely say any of those would be better than anything from Dell?  Cheesy

For comparison this is my current model, http://www.ciao.co.uk/Fujitsu_Siemens_SCALEO_P_Athlon_64_3500_2_2_GHz__6852833#productdetail
which was alright (till it started freezing up on me all the time) but sooo slow, so speed is important, if I have it on for a long time it won't seize up if I play music and watch video at the same time for example. I think lack of ram was a problem. Storage and sound also important.

Obviously I can't build it myself, if I took those examples into a computer shop and asked them to build it for me (- screen) with a Window 7 thrown in it would work? And be similar to what they'd suggest if I'd asked them?

Do you how much they'd charge to build it and how long it would take (more than a week?)

Do I need any additional software (like Nero for example) or I can I get it all free from the net?
Will my current keyboard, mouse and monitor http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors/969/mitsubishi-diamond-pro-720
work with them?

A few other questions, is it worth buying a new monitor, like I say I'm not a gamer, I watch a bit video streaming, bbc i player, youtube, would a posh monitor be wasted on that?

What about these new touchscreens, any use?

Also on the hard drive, why do people want two internal HDs, is it for back up?

Is it a good idea to ask for the hard drive to be partitioned and put the OS and programs on one and your data on the other as this makes your PC run smoother, true?

Is it possible to have too big a hard drive or too much ram, or is that impossible, like being too rich or too thin?

Sorry for the basicness of my questions!

I might give it a go if as you say these self assembled ones are no more likely to break down or be more trouble than the shop bought ones that I've gone with before.

If you are really new to the computer scene it might be better for you to buy your computer pre-assembled. There are a couple of system builders around Hull who would take a list of requirements like willcocks suggested and will give you a price for building it.

In fact I think there is a bloke on the forums who has a business doing it isn't there?

Unfortunately I can not recommend anyone as it has been many years since I was into the computer hardware fiddling scene!  Wink

Oh, I thought you'd just take that spec into an independent computer store and they'd make up a working machine for you.

If you are really new to the computer scene it might be better for you to buy your computer pre-assembled.
Dyls

To be honest I hadn't given any thought to anything other than the PC World option till coming on here! I imagined it would be really difficult and expensive and maybe it is.

Just had a google and can't find a local system builder, only mail order.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions it's back to square one. Embarrassed

There are plenty of system builders in Hull. Here are two of them www.thesystemworks.co.uk and www.nemax.co.uk.

Not yet! I've found it hard to find somewhere that will build something from specific components you want (as opposed to what they provide). There are a couple in the yellow pages but they only give a phone number so it would be a bit of a shot in the dark with them.

I know people here will turn their nose up but these don't look too terrible to me:

http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODCATEGORYVIEWPAGE&KEY=1&USG=RANGE&ENT=RANGE&APPS=234441

particularly this one
http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&KEY=560668&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&APPS=234441

If you customise and upgrade the hard drive, PSU and graphics card it costs about £600 (what do you think of the monitor, no HDMI just DVI, don't know if that matters much.)

That's pretty much what my current one cost when I bought it 5 years ago (without a monitor though).

Other builders, long wait

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/index.php?page=form&&select=intel1

http://www.dinopc.com/shop/pc/20-002-Intel-Core-2-Duo-PC-95p378.htm

Do overclockers build PCs, they seem to be willing to modify their prebuilt ones but probably not put them together from scratch even if with only their stuff.

dunno, ring em and ask! If they are to make money from you I am sure they would at least entertain the idea Tongue

You could always try building your own. It's not actually very difficult, there are loads of books around about it.

I actually built one of the ones commandergc mentioned, the LF2 one, for my step dad. Really simple build and enjoyed every minute of it.

This would make a reasonable media centre http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167153 - No optical drive but it does have a HDMI output, and the NVDIA Ion can decode 1080p HD video.
