For postcode hu4 6** we can confirm your line could support a connection speed of up to 6.5Mbps. I know for a fact that the house next door to me enjoys 8Mbps so I'm sure I should be able to get that too. i'll be a guinea pig too as I had to order one of the new packages yesterday, was going to go for one of the Max packages but missed out on them by 1 day as the new packages went live yesterday, Max are no longer available to new customers I'll let you know how I get on. I used to piggy back onto next doors wifi, but can't anymore, so I will be able to see what the difference is...

In all fairness you are the "twat" for leaving it unsecure in the first place.

I don't have an issue with someone using my wifi. I allow an open wifi point access to the internet only, they can not see the internal subnet. If I see someone accessing it 'too' much for 'too' long then I ban their mac address. I for one sometimes jump on an open wifi point for grabbing emails so feel i must reciprocate in kind. If everyone did so (don't start with arguments about kiddy porn just yet!) then life would be nice an easy, but this statement implies we have lots of bandwidth available to give away...

The only way to offer a hot-spot safely would be to put a server between the WIFI and the ADSL, and filter using the appropriate software. Otherwise you are leaving yourself open to the kiddy porn argument. I agree about hotspots though, if they are open I will use them! the owner is resposible for securing them, pleading ignorance is no excuse.

good point Hullnet ref. filtering, I do something along those lines. Any traffic from the WiFi point is sent to a VPS account in the states and pushed through Aquid and Dansguardian (proxy and filtering software). That way i am covered and i have a log of what people are viewing... Mine and my families (plus friends) children's traffic is also pushed through the same process. but not mine... giggidy giggidy....

Hi Hullnet - its http://www.vpsvillage.com/which is part of http://grokthis.net They have been spot on so far, I have a VPS account running Ubuntu LTS onto which i loaded Squid and Dansguardian (make sure you set up both to authenticate and don't make an open proxy...!! As i found out.. ) It costs me around £30 a 1/4. I am quite willing to help people set it up.. thanks

hee heee... I have one of these: http://solwise.co.uk/wireless-outdoorantenna-24-yagi-20yn.htmand i live on top of the hill in hessle... lets just say i can see a LOT of Hull's wifi points from up there... I also started making a Map of wifi hotspots in Hessle and surrounding area using wifi-fo-fum and GPS, I will have to post it sometime. It makes interesting reading, around 30% of Acess Points have no encryption while 1-2% are WPA encrypted, the others are WEP (various bit lengths).

That would be insteresting to see Personally I don't encrypt my network... I'm not bothered if people want to "sniff" what goes over my network, there's nothing special there... I restrict access by MAC address... I know that people can get through this but there's nothing they can do even if they do get connected to my network other than access the net... Maybe I'm stupid for doing this, maybe not... I like the danger involved
