These new services have got me wondering about local number portability. As far as I know, providers have to 'release' your telephone number to you to take elsewhere if you request it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porting_Authorisation_Code

Has anyone requested a PAC code from KC to transfer their 01482 number across to a VoIP provider yet?

A word of warning. I've read that although fixed line providers have to transfer numbers to VoIP providers if you request it, VoIP providers don't have to transfer the number to another provider if you choose to move again in the future (so check that they will before signing up!).

Interesting; the only reason I've kept my KC landline is because I can't be bothered with the upheaval of changing the number and the fiancee isn't too keen on changing it either.

It's worth giving them a call then. Just as for you PAC code. I've done it before with mobile phone providers and they don't even blink an eye. It'll be interesting to see if KC are as easy to deal with  Grin

I can't see them releasing any number or issuing a PAC code Smiley

Aye I've done it with mobile, but I hadn't even considered it a possibility for landline... I will definitely give this a go in the coming weeks, I'm dealing with sorting my grandads funeral at the moment as we lost him at the weekend so KC a little low on the priority list!

Good info there mate... Wink I remember asking Airnet about our current telephone number during our discussions earlier in the year. I'm sure Airnet said we would receive another number from themselves, don't remember anyone saying we could transfer our existing number... Huh? Not that I would be bothered about it to be honest, If I had my way I would do away with the land line phone altogether. Leese insists on keeping it because the parents still use landlines whereas everyone else uses mobiles... Roll Eyes
I've not received the telephone part of the installation yet so still using the Karoo line but will let you know what we decide to do as soon as... Smiley

Thanks.

Conversation with KC about PAC will be fun though, I think Adrian is probably right - they'll put up a fight, if not refuse outright.

As far as I can see it's a regulatory requirement TBH. If they don't port they get in bother with Ofcom.

It will certainly be interesting to see what they say.

Unfortunately they will give in eventually, an old friend of mine took their 01482 number - actually out of hull, though it wasn't far, I think it was Goole and for all I know they are provided by KC anyway (Though I am sure they said it was BT).

Some VoIP (sipgate for example) will divert a call coming from your geographic number to another of your choice (your mobile for instance) if your internet is down. That would be useful if you lost power for whatever reason.

I was going to use airnets voip service, but I decided to buy an unlocked pap2 from ebay £26 and get two payg 01482 numbers from connexin £5.88 conection each. That way I have voip up and running now and the kids have there own number. It works a treat. I was also lucky enough to get two consecutive numbers.
