Hey guys, I don't know anything about how Wimax works, but from what I have read it seems, that its like some upgraded wi-fi, right? So do you think its possible to buy some sort of Wimax router and sign a contract with AirNet and use the internet? I am about to move to centre of Hull, so I guess there should be pretty strong signal, so imo I wont need antenna on the top of my roof (just guessing). The thing is, that I dont know how long I will stay in Hull - so thats why I choose only 1 month contract. And I dont want to pay 150 pounds for instalation some device in rented apartment. So what do you think? PS: sorry for my english

I believe Air Net are using the nanostation wireless kit using 802.11n, WiMax requires a licence doesn't it? Anything you bought on the cheap would be unlikely to work, and the cost of buying the nanostation stuff, power over ethernet injector, cable etc would probably be the best part of £100 anyway.
That said, if it Air Net's infrastructure supports the 802.11n standard properly and you are in the city centre perhaps it's worth giving them a call... They might be a bit reticent about handing over the WPA key if they're not using some kind of network access control though!

I mean if you are in area where is very good signal coverage, you dont need to have big antenna on the roof, maybe it will be suficient to have the small antenna which is usually at the router (and the router is near window)? I dont know, I am not such technical guy

I dont know, I am not such technical guy No mate, there is no "big antenna" on my system there is a small Base Station fixed to the Ariel pole on the roof which receives the signal, it's a small box around 10cms X 30cms. The cable comes from the Base Station to a small telephone type socket on the wall inside the house, basically the Ethernet cable goes from this socket to the router and there we have our connection... So it doesn't matter if you live on the top floor of the empire state building (in Hull... ) with your router against the window it still needs the Base Station to receive the signal. Just the router on it own will be no use. If you are renting a place in the City Centre is there not an internet access point already installed by Karoo? Personally if your not staying in Hull that long your probably better just buying a dongle from Vodafone or similar... There's nothing cheap in Hull for internet...

Right, I wanted to avoid the instalation of socket and everything, because it costs money for something I wont own for a long, but from your words it seems, that its inevitable. I guess there is an access point by Karoo, but Karoo is not an alternative. They have minimum contract 1 year and you have to pay for a phone as well (clearly abusing of monopoly imo), so for 30GB (which is my very light data usage) will cost me around 35 pounds. Dongle have like 5gb data usage (I think) and its not very good for gaming. So it leaves me with AirNet - 150 pounds for instalation and then 22 pounds a month on 1 month contract. If I could avoid the initial fee for instalation, this would be perfect for me.

Ok Vim I understand you predicament here, as you say it's a shame it's not already installed and you just pay a month at a time. I'm guessing if your on business your employer wont pay?... Hope you get sorted though..

dont quote me on this but im sure that if you get your installation from airnet and you move they will move the equipment with you its a 70 charge if you want to move.
i had the same problem i just moved into a property but wasnt too keen on the area as my roots are on bransholme and im on greatfield, all my friends family ect.. live on suton park bransholme. i was thinking of moving back up there before my son went to school cause hes allready registerd at a school on sutton park, i ask them about this and said i might be moving in a year or so and he said its fine we will just take the equpiment with you when you move and its a 70 charge to get it moved and installed on another property..
hope this helps

To be fair though dunny Airnet obviously have to pay the installers to complete the removal & installation of the Base Station to your new property, it will also have to be tuned in again to a different antenna. So £70 is not bad really...

Thats interesting information. But if I will have to move, it will be somewhere like leeds or manchester (I have fresh MSc from math and there is almost no job offer for me) and there is no AirNet coverege (at least I think!)

Well, unfornutately it seems like I have no other choice because my landlord just told that I cant install it I mean, I would pay for improving his apartment and still he doesnt allowed me to do that, wtf? So the only chance for decent internet is, if I could just have some device inside, that could catch the signal of AirNet and it seems its not possible
