Author Topic: Can I squeeze more out of my connection?  (Read 1170 times)

Here's a question for the more technically minded members of the forum.

Is it possible for me to squeeze more out of my connection?

I used to play an online speedway game and often hosted so needed a stable connection, so I asked Karoo to cap me at 8mbps. The Karoo speed checker says for my area I should get 7mbps but my connection is rock solid at 8Mbps so I wondered if I could move up to 9mbps maybe?

Here is my router info,

Uptime: 35 days, 15:18:58

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,023 / 8,191

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 517.00 / 523.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 20.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 41.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.5 / 6.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 62 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 30,099 / 111,915,371

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 30,099 / 10,383

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 22,194 / 9,581

Appreciate any thoughts?

That does seem low for off peak speed. Not sure how technically minded you are? If you're like me, It may be worth putting some of your data on here (including wiring i.e. any extension leads) for the guys to analyze.

Also is it worth dropping to a lower package? Do you need the 150gig peak time download allowance? 35 quid a month is a hell of a lot to pay for 3meg broad band.

Hi Marko, I'm not too sure you will get much more out of the line, given the current attenuation and SNR. Do you have any wiring or extensions you can clean up?

You may get more speed by going to the 3dB profile, but then it may be unstable if your SNR fluctuates.

No, all wiring is sorted. The router is plugged straight into the main socket and that wire (I forget which one cos I dc'd it a while back) is disconnected in the box. Also only one phone (Well...3 phones but cordless listening to one dock) shares the line via filter.

No worries...I think I'd rather have a stable line than risk a faster unstable one. I just get a bit envious of some of the other speeds we're seeing on here  Sad
......Though Djwindas has made me feel a bit better Grin .......Sorry Djwindas  Wink

Thanks for the reply, Adrian.

You could always try the 3dB profile, see how much extra speed you get, and see if it's stable...
I have a stable sync of 17Mbit on a 3dB profile...

How do I go about trying the 3db profile? Is that a router setting of something I ask karoo to do? If so...what exactly do I ask them? I'm as thick as pig $h!t where this stuff is concerned.

Thanks

It's something the helpdesk will do for you. Just ask them to put you on the 3dB Target SNR profile.

Just got off the phone to the tech help guy. He tried the 3db profile but said there was no speed to be gained so advised to changed it back to the old profile, so I said ok.

Oh well...was worth a try....Thanks again for the help, Adrian  Smiley.....at least I sounded like I knew what I was talking about  Wink
